Facts about Sterling Heights
Located in Macomb County, Sterling Heights is considered one of the core suburbs for Detroit. In years past, it was also one of the key suburbs where the automobile industry maintained a strong presence. According to the 2020 census, Sterling Heights has a population of more than 134,000 residents, making it the fourth largest city in the state.
What is now Sterling Heights was the first part of Shelby Township, which was created in 1827. In 1835, it was organized as Jefferson Township. Three years later, the residents adopted the name of Sterling Township.
Until the middle of the 20th century, Sterling Township was primarily an agricultural community. Crops grown in the area were frequently transported to Detroit and sold there. Additional industries began to appear more commonly when the township was incorporated as Sterling Heights in 1968.
One of the distinguishing characteristics of Sterling Heights is that it has long been home to people immigrating from other nations. Many citizens have ancestries that include Bosnians, Albanians, Poles, Slovenians, and other nationalities. After the US-Iraqi War in 2003, a number of people, many of them Iraqi Christians, settled in the city.
