Facts about Berkley

Located in Oakland County, Berkley is considered an inner-ring suburb of Detroit. While the first inhabitants date back to the early 19th century, it would be almost a century before any efforts to incorporate would take place. According to the 2020 census results, Berkley has a population of 15,194 residents.

By the middle of the 19th century, what would become known as Berkley was home to a large number of dairy farms. This would continue into the early years of the 20th century, when the construction of a Ford automobile plant would begin to change the community. Farms were gradually sold to make way for housing development. This led to formally incorporating the area into a village in 1923. That was followed with incorporation into a city in 1932.

Berkley's intentional design involves a grid pattern for the streets, with a number of smaller lots, and a downtown that's pedestrian friendly. The arrangement and the size of the lots has helped the city to become a favored place to live. Even so, the city is considered one of the more affordable places to live and own property. In recent years, Money.com named Berkley as the 28th best place to live, based on affordability.
