Facts about Bloomfield Hills
Found in Oakland County, Bloomfield Hills is a small city with more than 4,400 residents. Considered a suburb within the Metro Detroit Area, the city is located roughly 20 miles from downtown Detroit. Other than a portion of its southern border, Bloomfield Hills is completely surrounded by Bloomfield Township.
The history of Bloomfield Hills dates back to the early 19th century. In 1820, Oakland County was divided into two townships, with Bloomfield Township being one of the two. What is today Bloomfield Hills was primarily used for farming. Around the beginning of the 20th century, rich Detroit residents began to purchase land and construct homes for weekend use. This led to the formation of a village in 1927. Owing to attempts by nearby Birmingham to annex the area, the residents chose to become a city in 1932.
Today, Bloomfield Hills is home to a number of companies. Fairway Products, Great Lakes Filters, and Acme Mills are examples of businesses that maintain headquarters in the city. Other businesses with headquarters or main offices within the city include Penske Automotive Group, Larson Realty Group, and Gregory J. Schwartz & Co.
