Facts about Detroit

Nicknamed Motor City, Detroit holds the distinction of being the largest city in Michigan. The city proper has more than 639,000 residents, while the Detroit Metropolitan Area is home to more than 4.3 million people. The Metro area is considered the second largest in the Midwest, while the city itself is the largest city to be found along the United States-Canada border.

While the city's original incorporation took place in 1806, Detroit came to be strongly identified with the automobile industry in the early 20th century. For decades, that industry led to significant population growth, with mid-century figures of more than 1.8 million residents in the city alone. As the US automobile industry began to decline in the second half of the 20th century, much of Detroit was left empty. In recent years, the population has stabilized, and redevelopment in several areas has begun to attract positive attention.

Detroit Detroit is still known as the heart of the US. automobile industry. Today, what's known as the Big Three auto manufacturers continue to maintain headquarters in the Metro Area. Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler) also maintain part of their production facilities within the area.
